Fatphobia is the dirty, little secret of the opera world. Hidden under excuses about costumes, "health" concerns, and pleasing audiences is a serious bias that effects every performer, from students still in school all the way to singers in top opera houses. In this episode we discuss:
Some of the reasons fatphobia is still so prevalent in the industry
The problems of typecasting by body
Experiences of a few world-class singers
Ways we as performers can improve the spaces we perform in
OPERA OFFSTAGE ON GOFUNDME
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
There is a lack of representation for classical music in online spaces, especially for young musicians. Many graduates leave music school without the proper life or career skills to propel their career from the academic to the professional level. These include everything from fitness and mental health to finances and networking. While Opera Offstage caters to musicians specifically, these are topics of interest to everyone.
We have launched a GoFundMe for Opera Offstage! The goal of this fundraiser is to raise $5,000 to help us cover operational costs for 2020.
We believe in the importance of supporting the future of classical music. This begins with giving the rising generation of artists the skills they need to have a stable career in music. Opera Offstage is our way of supporting our fellow artists while also allowing us to pave the way for classical music to continue to thrive in the world.
Whether you’re a professional musician, student, or just someone who loves classical music, Opera Offstage is for you and we hope you will consider donating any amount towards its ongoing mission to provide accessible and affordable music education.
